High voltage capacitor units

We offer three-phase or single phase high voltage capacitor units, surge capacitors and induction heating capacitors. Our capacitor units are constructed using polypropylene all-film dielectric impregnated with bio-degradable, non-pcb and non-chlorine dielectric liquid. Each unit consists of several elements connected in series and parallel to achieve the required voltage and reactive power rating. Elements can each be fitted with an internal fuse, and capacitor units typically contain an internal discharge resistor. The units have porcelain bushings that are welded to the stainless steel containers. Three-phase high voltage capacitor units can be manufactured up to 8 kV line voltage and up to 850 kvar per unit. Single phase high voltage capacitor can be manufactured up to 13 800 V with internal fuses, and higher voltages without fuses, and with reactive power rating to approximately 1 000 kvar. All units are low-loss, light-weight and comply with most national and international standards.

Air core reactors

Air core reactors provide a linear response of impedance at all currents — an important requirement in many applications. Our dry type air core reactors are maintenance free and environmentally friendly. The reactors can be used in many applications, but the design and construction follow the same pattern in each case. Several aluminium conductors connected in parallel are wound in epoxy impregnated fibreglass filaments, forming cylinders. One or more of these cylinders are connected in parallel between aluminium spiders. The resin is cured and the reactor is carefully painted to form a perfect weather seal and to provide long term protection against UV. Our reactors have been extensively type tested against various national and international standards including IEC60076 and AS/NZS1028, including short time tests at KEMA. We can provide all the necessary accessories and design guides to ensure your application is well engineered, from corona rings and bird barriers, to magnetic field strength studies and seismic design verification.

Medium and high voltage capacitor banks and harmonic filters

We create bespoke capacitor banks and harmonic filters at all voltage levels from MV, HV to EHV built from high voltage capacitor units, air core reactors, and the necessary additional components. Our smallest installations range from less than a megavar at 6.6 kV, and our largest installations have rated power of hundreds of megavars and 400 kV. These banks include the necessary protection current transformers, surge arresters, as well as switch bay equipment such as cable termination structures, circuit breakers, disconnections and earth switches.

Control and protection equipment

All capacitor installations must be adequately protected and control to ensure correct operation within the equipment ratings. We provide protection equipment specifically designed for sensitive unbalance protection. Capacitor units are commonly connected in a double star or H-configuration. Such installations require current unbalance protection relays that are sensitive to very minute changes in operating current. Smaller medium voltage capacitor banks may be connected in a single star arrangement, and for such applications we can provide sensitive voltage unbalance protection relays. These relays are available as dedicated unbalance protection relays and more comprehensive relays that can performance sensitive unbalance protection as well as extensive line side protection. We offer a range of control equipment suitable for low and medium voltage capacitor bank control. These automatic six- and twelve step controllers offer you a clear graphical user interface, smart control and flexible communication options.

Low voltage capacitor units

Our three-phase low voltage units are available in voltage ratings from 200 V to 1 000 V. Several standard voltage ratings are available. We always recommend using detuning reactors with capacitor installations and for 415 V applications we recommend 525 V rated capacitor units. The units are constructed from metallised polypropylene film. The units are selfhealing and dry without any impregnation liquid. Each element is protected by an internal fuse. We can supply discharge resistors to the terminals of the units, or alternative we can provide an electronic discharge device that reduces capacitor bank losses significantly and can result in very fast discharge of the capacitor unit. Units can be supplied in IP00 or IP42 with the addition of a terminal box. Individual units can provide from 2.5 kvar to 125 kvar.

Statcom solutions

Merus Static Compensators (STATCOMs) are part of the Merus FACTS product family and built on modern IGBT power electronics technology. Merus STATCOMs are designed to provide real-time reactive power compensation and active harmonic filtering in demanding applications. Merus STATCOMs minimise voltage variations and mitigate flicker caused by heavy industrial loads, such as electric arc furnaces (EAFs), mine winders, harbour cranes, excavators, etc. In wind and solar farms, Merus STATCOMs enable grid code compliance. Transmission and distribution utilities benefit from Merus STATCOMs in the form of improved transmission and distribution capacity. Merus Power provides STATCOM solutions up to 38.5kV levels. Merus Power can supply a complete turnkey solution.

Uninterrupted Power Quality

Merus Uninterrupted Power Quality (UPQ) is an innovative concept, combining the functionalities of an active harmonic filter and a UPS into a single robust solution. UPQ protects mission critical processes from supply interruptions and voltage sags while maintaining supply voltage quality by compensating harmonic currents and the reactive power fluctuations of non-linear loads. Merus UPQ has two operation modes. In secured supply conditions, it operates in power quality modes, performing active filtering of harmonic distortions as well as load balancing and flicker mitigation. When it detects a voltage sag or power outage in the supply network, it shifts to power protection mode to protect against critical loads. Merus UPQ is available from low up to medium voltage levels.
